The World Youth Parliament for Water is a youth network acting for water around the world. This movement of passionate young people from over 80 countries effects change at all levels: from local communities, where they implement concrete actions, to the United Nations General Assembly, where they advocate for youth participation in the water sector. The WYPW is supported by the International Secretariat for Water.
Its mission
- To coordinate youth water action and advocacy at the local, basin and international level.
- To guarantee that the water sector recognizes youth as key stakeholders
- To raise youth awareness of water issues
- To encourage youth to build capacities and to act for water
On World Water Day, 22 March, the 2020 World Water Development report was launched with the theme, “Water and Climate Change”. The report warns that Climate change will affect the availability, quality and quantity of water needed for basic human needs, thus undermining enjoyment of the basic rights to safe drinking water and sanitation for billions of people.
The publication at helping the water community to tackle the challenges of climate change and informing the climate change community about the opportunities that improved water management offers in terms of adaptation and mitigation.
The 2020 United Nations World Water Development Report focuses on the challenges, opportunities and potential responses to climate change, in terms of adaptation, mitigation and improved resilience that can be addressed through improving water management.
Combining climate change adaptation and mitigation, through water, is a win-win proposal, improving the provision of water supply and sanitation services and combating both the causes and impacts of climate change, including disaster risk reduction.
WFEO's Water Working Group - WGoW will encompass all WFEO's water engineering initiatives and its relations with UN's bodies and agencies, mainly with UN-Water and UNESCO, within the scope of the engineering's contribution to UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Water Working Group's undertaking will comprise the 2019-2021 three year period. During these period, three monographs will be scheduled regaring the following topics:
- Managing droughts and floods: Best practices and engineering contribution. Summer 2019, with delivery anticipated at WEC2019. Table of Contents
- Achieving SDG 6 (Water goals): Contribution from engineering. Summer 2020
- Adaptation to climate change: water and engineering contribution. Summer 2021
On Wednesday, February 28th, the awarding ceremony of the first edition of Manuel Lorenzo Pardo’s Awards on Water Management best practices was held. On a biennial basis, the Association of Civil Engineers awards people, organizations and institutions regarding water which stand out for their best practice in the integrated water resource management model.
The entities awarded this year were the Ebro river Basin Authority and Valencia’s Water Court. In the awardee proclamation speech, Association of Civil Engineers’ Vicepresident Tomás A. Sancho, highlighted the avant garde nature of both organizations in their different areas: Valencia’ Water Court as a millenial institution regarding the ruling of water rights and Ebro river Basin Authority, as the first basin organization, created by Mr. Manuel Lorenzo Pardo in 1926.
Applying water quality indicators and indices is one of the major challenges in addressing poor quality of waters.
UNU-FLORES has designed a questionnaire that aims to analyse the application of water quality indicators and indices for measuring water quality in practice. It is a joint effort by scientists and practitioners in order to better understand challenges for achieving water-related sustainability goals. Results will help experts in designing relevant capacity development programs for measuring water quality in the future. The online questionnaire is available in six languages (English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian), and is accessible from this link.
